I think it's safe to say that I have written hundreds of news releases in my career. Some have resulted in small calendar mentions, and others have resulted in dozens of media outlets covering our story. Below are just a couple of recent examples and highlights.

Safeco grant news release

Employer: Indianapolis Parks Foundation

Project Title: Safeco grant news release

Details: I wrote this news release announcing a $50,000 grant toward a park renovation project. The release was picked up by The Indianapolis Star - both in the same-day afternoon-update e-newsletter and printed edition the next day. It was also included in at least one local evening news program and generated a string of comments on the Star's Web site.

Strawberry_Festival

Employer: Christ Church Cathedral

Project Title: Strawberry Festival Media Successes

Details: As communications director, I sent news releases, coordinated media appearances and interviews and monitored media coverage of the Cathedral's annual Strawberry Festival, an event that attracts 25,000 people to Monument Circle each year. Among the highlights of the 2006 promotions: a daylong visit by Mark DeCarlo and the Travel Channel's "Taste of America" crew. The show featured the event in a five-minute segment.

NRPA

Employer: Indianapolis Parks Foundation

Project Title: "Leave it Better than you Found It: Paving the Public-private Partnership Bridge"

Details: Developed a working relationship with the editor of the National Recreation and Park Association's national Parks and Recreation magazine, earning us a full-page article as well as another smaller article within a one-year period.

creche

Employer: Christ Church Cathedral

Project Title: Wind damage to Nativity scene

Details: When a wind storm blew through the city in December 2006, the Nativity scene on the Cathedral's front lawn was damaged. The morning of the storm, I took a photo of the damage and sent it to local media. Several television stations and the Indianapolis Star picked it up. The photo in this article was actually picked up by the Associated Press for use in media throughout the state. It appeared in the New Albany newspaper, among possibly others. I am also quoted in this article.
